An Foras Pátrúnachta representatives recently had the opportunity to meet the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins at a special event in Áras an Uachtaráin.
The President organised the event to honour the Irish Language Commissioner, Seán Ó Cuirreáin, who resigned from his post recently.
After ten years in the role, Ó Cuirreáin announced his resignation last December with effect from 23 February 2014. He stated that he felt there was little else he could personally achieve in relation to language rights for Irish speakers and Gaeltacht communities in the two years left in his appointment term.
The President thanked Ó Cuirreáin for all he has done to foster the everyday use of the Irish language. President Higgins spoke about his personal disappointment at the lack of Irish language skills within the Civil Service.
