Gaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh Attend the Launch of Gaelmail

There was cause for celebration for the students and certainly the staff of Gaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh with an invitation to attend the occasion in the Google Headquarters on Thursday, 11 December, when Gaelmail or Gmail as Gaeilge was officially launched.

Pupils of the school made their way to Barrow St and when they reached the Google building there was an extensive welcome for them. The schools name was shining on the steps of the stairs!

They met lots of different people from the world of Gaeilge, and the world of media. When they went into the enormous lecture hall it was clear that the Google community were just as excited about the occasion as they were!

Different members of Google’s team spoke, and they all made their best effort to use their Gaeilge, including a Norwegian man! They all spoke about the localization that Google undertakes. They emphasized the importance that comes with a company like Google that caters for different languages and cultures all over the world.

The highlight of the day was when Hector Ó hEochagáin was welcomed to officially launch the Gaelmail. He was a great speaker creating lots of fun, especially when he hosted the Table Quiz.

The Gaelcholáiste were taken aback when they heard Hector announce that one of their pupils, Orlaith Ní Cheallaigh, had won the word search competition that they had all entered a while ago. Hector presented Orlaith with a Chromecast and other prizes.

They managed to organise a tour of the building, and the pupils enjoyed it immensely. Hector promised them that he would visit the school in the new year, a building that’s a little different beside Googles but brilliant all the same!
